In January 2024, I had the opportunity to interview with Zywa, a fintech company for Gen Z, for a User Experience Designer position. As part of the process, I was tasked with redesigning their savings vault feature.

The brief was short and simple: "Zywa has an innovative savings vault feature, and you have the task of the entire redesign aspect for this feature. Your role involves not only creating the design elements but also captivating our audience with your vision.".

My first step was to conduct secondary research on existing apps that provide this feature, such as Cowrywise, Revolut, and Cash App.

As a Cowrywise user myself, I leveraged Mobbin to access screenshots from Revolut and Cash App—helping me analyze common design patterns in the industry. While Cowrywise and Revolut aren't specifically targeted at Gen Z, they offered valuable insights with their solid user experience. Cash App, with its Gen Z-friendly approach, particularly influenced visual design direction.

After the research, I organized this redesign around 4 key areas:

  1. Customization
  2. Groups and Cliques
  3. Gamification
  4. Incentives and Rewards

In the following sections, I'll walk through how I tackled these four key areas, supported by high-fidelity designs and prototypes to illustrate my approach.

Customization

Gen Z’s strong preference for tailored experiences shaped my approach to redesigning the savings vault feature. To reflect their individuality, I emphasized customization, allowing users to personalize vaults with their choice of name, color and image, creating a tone and mood that fits their unique identity.

To further personalize the experience, users can choose between saving freely or setting a 'Vault goal.' Setting a Vault goal requires specifying the amount to save, the frequency, and the duration for which the vault will be locked. This approach fosters commitment and encourages the development of a consistent savings habit.

Groups and Cliques

Gen Z thrives on community and group identity, often identifying strongly with cliques or shared interests. Introducing a group vault feature taps into this behavior by allowing users to save collectively with friends.

This feature can be extremely useful for creators looking to level up their content together by saving for gears and equipments, for a school club saving for a field trip or an event, or for a group of friends with a shared goal of attending the World Cup in 2026.

A Group Vault creator can invite friends directly on Zywa or send an invite via mobile number, encouraging wider adoption of the Zywa app through social connections.
